- Prime Minister Kubilius to set off on bicycle tour along historic roads of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in Belarus
- 2010/07/23
Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius embarks on his annual holidays on Sunday, July 25. As usual, the Prime Minister has opted for outdoor recreation: accompanied by his colleagues, he will be cycling along the historic roads of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
"Our summer bicycle tour arranged for the 8th time now has become a nice tradition. We have already explored numerous picturesque Lithuanian locations, and are now exploring untreaded paths elsewhere. Last year, together with our colleagues, we toured round Poland dropping by at the Seinai and Punsk to visit Lithuanians. This year we intend to see some of the common rich Lithuanian-Belarusian history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania."– said Prime Minister Kubilius.
Together with his wife Rasa and the colleagues the Prime Minister plans to see historic sights, castles and other historic heritage, to meet with the Lithuanians living in Belarus and visit the Lithuanian school in Rimdžiūnai.
The Prime Minister intends to cover the distance of 700 kilometres in one week and visitt Lyda, Novogrudok, Mira, Nesvyžius, Alšėnai, Kreva, Ašmena and the Lithuanian communities in Gervėčiai and Rimdžiūnai.
“Lithuania and Belarus share geographical neighbourhood, rich history of the GDL, and shoulder to shoulder presence on the European continent. We can and we must encourage Belarus to move closer to European values. This, when it happens, will have an impact on our future too, including energy security – here we see common challenges and we must get together to address theses issues."– said Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius.
The Prime Minister will be accompanied by ministers Dainius Kreivys and Donatas Jankauskas, members of the Seimas Vitas Matuzas, Edmundas Pupinis, Justinas Urbanavičius and others.
In his absence from 26 July 20 August, the Prime Minister will be replaced temporarily by Vice Minister of Finance, Ingrida Šimonytė.
