Andrius Kubilius: Lithuania supports Georgia and can learn from it
2012/04/30

On Georgia`s territorial integrity, Andrius Kubilius has pointed out that Lithuania supports Georgia even in small things: recently, the State Lithuanian Language Commission has approved the recommendation of calling South Ossetia the region of Tskhinvali, the way it is called in Georgia. A. Kubilius has also welcomed Georgia`s aspirations to join the European Union and NATO. The Prime Minister has expressed his hope that during the Lithuanian EU presidency next year, it will be possible to celebrate three significant occasions in Georgia: the conclusion of negotiations on the EU Association Agreement, a Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement and a Visa Waiver Agreement with the European Union. A. Kubilius has added that the latter two should be applicable across all the territory of Georgia.

The Lithuanian Prime Minister has also said that he, among other things, came to Georgia to learn. "I have personally come to Georgia to learn about reforms, creation of better business environment, ensuring appropriate law enforcement and successful fight against corruption. These are very valuable lessons to be learnt from Georgia not only by its neighbors, but also ourselves."

After the meeting with Georgian Prime Minister, A. Kubilius took part in the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding for Strengthened Cooperation between the Office of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania and the Office of the Government of Georgia. A little later Andrius Kubilius and the Prime Minister of Georgia, N. Gilauri, joined the Georgian-Lithuanian municipal forum.

The meeting with Georgian Prime Minister, N. Gilauri, has been the first item on the agenda of the official three-day visit to Georgia. The Lithuanian Prime Minister is expected to meet with other top-ranking officials to discuss the development of bilateral relations and Georgia-Lithuania cooperation prospects, as well as Lithuania`s support for Georgia on its road towards the Euro-integration.
A meeting between the Prime Minister Kubilius and Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has been schedulled for 3.00 p.m. (Lithuania‘s time) today.
